Cu Chi Tunnels History

Cu Chi Tunnels were formed during the resistance war against the French colonialists (around 1948) and were dug by Communist forces. Because it was dug by hand. At first, the tunnels only had short sections with simple structures, which were used to hide documents and shelter officers in enemy rear areas. During the resistance war against America, the North Vietnamese army and the Viet Cong reinforced and expanded the tunnels.

With strength and strong will, the army and people of Cu Chi have created a network of vertical, horizontal, multi-story tunnels, more than 200km long underground, combined with about 500km of trenches and fortifications on the ground, like a “net of heaven and earth,” making enemies terrified.

Cu Chi Tunnel historical relic area includes Ben Duoc Tunnels (Saigon-Gia Dinh Military Region Base), Saigon-Gia Dinh District Party Committee Base, and Ben Dinh Tunnels (Area Cu Chi District Party Committee).

The Significant Roles of Cu Chi Tunnels

In the Past (War)

Cu Chi Tunnels

The Cu Chi Tunnels were created with significant importance in the military activities and operations of officers, soldiers, and the people on the outskirts of Saigon, Cholon, and Gia Dinh during the two resistance wars against the French and the Americans. They not only served as shelters, resting places, and living quarters for Vietnamese forces but also as storage for weapons, provisions, food, and drinking water. The tunnels were also workplaces for leaders and commanders, and they served as medical facilities for treating and nurturing wounded soldiers. Additionally, the tunnels provided a secure refuge for women, the elderly, and children. Within the extensive Cu Chi Tunnels network, there were large tunnels with well-ventilated roofs cleverly disguised for gatherings, film screenings, and cultural performances. During wartime, the tunnels became the central hub for the activities of combat forces and the daily lives of the people, playing a significant role in the victories of the resistance movements.
